  • Pioneers in Curriculum

In grades 5 and 6, students are grouped in each grade level by gender, with instruction tailored to the way students learn. Teachers are partnered, with students attending Math and Science with one teacher and Language Arts and Social Studies with another. Staff members have received training for differentiating their instruction. At each grade level there is one mixed-gender classroom, a combination of girls and boys, for students who’s families choose to have the child in a traditional environment. In addition to gender-based instructional groupings, project-based hands-on activities are utilized in every classroom. Technology is used on a daily basis.

Each day students meet in small groups focused on remediation, maintenance or enrichment. Students will be reassigned each 8-step assessment cycle and grouped according to their mastery of the targeted Language Arts and Math standards on the previous assessment. Activities in Success time are designed to be fun and address the specific needs of our students.

Additionally, the arts are integrated throughout all content areas in alignment with the Common Core and Indiana State Academic Standards.

  • Leaders in Academics

Additional academic support is available outside of the school day through three programs, Saturday School, Guarantee Club and ISTEP Boot Camp. Saturday School meets bi-monthly and provides instructional assistance to students in lieu of out of school suspensions, as well as those in need of assistance in reaching academic proficiency. Guarantee Club is an after-school program focused on ISTEP preparation for students who are near mastery. ISTEP Boot Camp is an extended day program that is required of all students during the two weeks prior to each ISTEP assessment.

Students receiving a red score on their assessments for 2 or more cycles are placed in an Assessment Remediation Class (ARC) during one of their Arts Block classes. Students may earn their way out of ARC through improved assessment scores.

  • Student Driven Schedule

Dickinson Follows an eight period schedule. Each student has two periods of Language Arts and two periods of math. Science and Social Studies complete the academic portion of the day. Students attend these classes in a grade level “house” area, seperated from students in other grade levels.
